What is Steps to Empowerment?

Steps to Empowerment is a 5-step method designed to help individuals build trust, confidence, and creative self-expression through movement and social emotional learning. It's a course full of tools that can be used in various learning environments to positively impact students, clients, and oneself.

Who can benefit from this course?

While my experience is primarily with foster and at-risk youth, the principles and methods taught in the Steps to Empowerment course are applicable to all students and can enhance any relationship.

Do I need to have experience with dance or movement to use this method?

No, you don't need any prior experience with dance or movement. The course is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background in these areas.

How flexible is the 5-step method?

The method is quite flexible. Although the steps are presented in a specific order that builds upon each other, they can be adapted and used in the sequence that works best for you and your group, much like how everyone dances in their own unique way.

Is it necessary to master each step before moving on to the next one?

No, it's not necessary to completely master each step before progressing. The method is more about gradual improvement and building upon each step as you go, similar to learning dance steps.

Setting Clear Intentions


In this module we’re going to explore what it means to set clear intentions and how that affects our overall environment.

  • How do we create an intention that ultimately transforms our environment?

  • Embodying the intention throughout our day

  • Experiencing a transformed learning space


Creating a Safe Space

In this module we’re going to explore the variety of ways we can create a safe space for our students, youth, peers and ourselves. 

  • What does it mean to create a safe space for ourselves and the young people we work with?

  • Exploring our own unique learning spaces 

  • Who is at the forefront of the safe space?

  • How do we show up to our learning spaces and how do we show up in life?

  • Emotional check-ins


Using Mindful Movement Methods

In this module we’re going to explore what it’s like to use Mindful Movement Methods to connect back to out bodies and find our center. 

  • Using visualization techniques to expand beyond ourselves

  • Becoming the best version of ourselves

  • Exploring body awareness through visualization and somatic techniques

  • Understanding how our body holds on to emotions and ways to release them safely

  • Feeling Joy and Energy in our bodies

  • Releasing negative emotions for a clear mind

  • Regulating our nervous system to improve focus


Creative Self Expression

In this module we’re going to explore and celebrate the variety of ways we might see students create and innovate when they feel empowered.

  • How do we create opportunities for Voice and Choice?

  • What does it look like to give students/youth creative freedom?

  • Activating the Creative Spark

  • How do we get students to feel safe to express themselves in daily life and in a creative way?

  • How does creativity foster self empowerment and confidence?
